Default So of my favourite patterns

    Hey FOAL'ers thought id share a few flies with you guys and girls, these work good in Australia and i think most were designed here. Excuse my tying as its not the best, first time taking photos of my flies too. Any way here goes;

    The Bag Fly

    Hook; 10-8 1xHeavy, 1xLong
    Thread; Black
    Tail: Black Hen Hackle
Body: Gold Tinsel, ribbed with Gold wire
    Throat: Red Hen/Cock Hackle
Wing: Hessian Bag, Black Cock Hackle, Orange Cock hackle

    Tom Jones

Hook: 14-10 1-2xLong, wet fly hook
    Thread: Black
Tail: Black Goat or Squirrel Tail
Body: Olive underfur of wallaby/kangaroo dubbing
Wings: Olive Wallaby/Kangaroo fur tied sparse.

    Carrot Fly

    Hook:12-14 Dry fly
    Tag: Mirage or Pearl Mylar(Optional)
    Thread: Fire Orange
Body: Orange Seal Fur or Substitute
Hackle: Oversized cheap webby Cock hackle can also use Hen(The softer the better I use Whiting Eurohackle)
Comments: If the colour of the fly spooks the fish try a red or claret version. I usually tie this fly on first before with a red tag dry 2 feet behind it.

    Shaving Brush

    Hook: 12-14 Dry Fly
    Thread: Black
    Tail: Black Hen
    Body: Chocolate Brown Antron Dubbing
    Rib: Copper wire
Wing: Dark Dun Deer hair tied forward then wrapped with thread a few times.
Comment: Great emerger fly much prefer using this fly than dun patterns, also good as a general attractor pattern. I tie it in many different colour combinations.

    Default Another...

    Pearly John

Hook: 16-10 Nymph with or without gold bead
    Thread: Black
    Tail: Sulphur Orange biots
Abdomen:Hends Shellback colour 15 ribbed with black wire.
Thorax:UV black Ice Dub with 2 turns Furnace hen hackle trimmed on top.
    Wingcase: Same as abdomen.
    Comments:
I put this fly together because I like the look of the Pearl Shellback, I wanted a fly similar to the Copper John without all the weight, it became one of my killer patterns this year and my fathers favourite nymph pattern.

Wallaby fur is hard to come by in stores and i prefer it to kangaroo, Kangaroo fur can be bought easy. Its similar to squirrel, its a bit more crinkled but alot longer its great for dubbing or using as wings.

    Hi,

A very nice collection. I really like the bag fly, though all of them look like good patterns (good photographs too). Thanks for them.

Your carrot fly pattern will be gracing my fly box for this summer season.
Looks good for waking up finnicky fish.

A very nice collection of flies. I think kangaroo dubbing is available
here in the UK, but what is wallaby like? May be able to find a substitute.
As to your Carrot Fly, here is Skues version, no picture, I'm afraid.
    Name: Carrot Nymph. - 50 Favourite Nymphs;

    T. Donald Overfield - #33 page 74.
    Hook: Size 14 - 16.

    Silk: Primrose silk.

Tail: Green parrot feather-fibres or substitute.

Tag: Four turns of tying silk.

Body: Rear third - pale yellow wool, middle third - hot orange wool,

    thorax - greenish seal?s fur.

    Hackle: Short fibred olive-green hen.

If anybody has some green parrot feathers,
    now is your chance.

    Donald,

It just so happens, I do have some green parrot feathers. They are very small though.
