    Default Ross Rods

A couple of weeks ago, my daughter gave me a Ross Essence FW fly rod. It's an 8 1/2'-4 piece- 5 weight. I've lawn cast it a couple of times and with a WF5F Cortland Peach, I got out to my brick wall of 60'. I'm just wondering if anyone here has any experience with the new line of Ross rods and what you think of them. I'm not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth here. I'm just curious if I should have been able to cast further that 60'. It was windy. Until I received that rod from my daughter I had no idea Ross even made fly rods.

I have the very same rod in a 3wt and I found it performed better by overlining. I had real good luck with a 4wt Rio Grand on it, and it throws a really tight loop with that. I thought the rod was really nice and do like it.

    Thumbs up

    Joe,
60' is pretty good! How often do you need to cast farther than that on our waters? If you want to try a 6wt. line and don't have one, let me know. Best Regards....

I may be wrong but isn't the line rating for when you actually have 30' of line past the tip of the rod? So when you are out to 60' haven't you effectively over-lined the rod by one line weight already. I thought most people over-lined when the are having trouble loading the rod up close, not when shooting for distance. In fact, for distance casting a 4wt line might actually shoot farther.
I may be completely misinterpreting what I heard, but I think that is how it was explained to me at one time.

Good thoughts you guys. I've got both lines and I'll give them both a try. And, yes, 60' is usually plenty far enough.

Joe, 60ft is never far enough. I have an evil friend that tells me to put the fly 6" from the bank, then proceeds to row the drift boat farther and farther away...... I cant complain much, he gave me the worlds bestest dog!

    Z,
If I could cast like you, I'd be tickled.

Just once, I'd like to cast to the backing.
