There's a couple of small trout streams in the immediate area and the Farmington River, one of the best trout rivers in the northeast is about an hour away.
Essex itself is at the mouth of the Connecticut River and around Labor Day the bluefish will be out in force. There will be plenty of stripers too but mostly at night.
Further up river the Connecticut has an excellent smallmouth fishery for those with boats

What Dudley said... only addition would be the Thames which is nearby and holds some Striper activity throughout the year.

Your only 1- 1.5 hours away from anything in Ct. from where you will be.
