I find as long as you don't delete the cookies FAOL saves to your machine, it should remain as selected.

Under User CP go to Thread Display Options under Edit Options. It is there you can select your default.

Normand your antivirus may be deleating cookies evertime it scans, if this is happening every couple of weeks and not every time you log off that could be your problem.
BTW you should clean your cookies and defrag your hard drive occasionaly it helps to keep your machine running quicker.
