Unhappy Regal Vise, price of pedestal base

Since before I started tying I have wanted a Regal Vise, I like the way they look function etc. One thing keeping me from seriously considering one is the fact that they charge $80 for a pedestal base. Can anyone explain to me why a chunk of cast metal with a wing bolt should cost over $80 (cabela's price) Is there somthing I'm missing here.

    Enlighten me if you can.

If you don't have your heart set on a Regal base, both Cascade Crest Tools and Griffin make bases for allot less than what Regal sells theirs for. Cascade's is 3 1/2# and I think Griffin's is 4#.

Thanks Dave, my current pedestal base is a chunk of poplar 1X4 with a pipe flange and nipple, I drilled and taped the nipple for a 1/4 inch bolt.
It works but it isn't pretty, If I spend that much money on a vise it ought to sit on something that doesn't look like it came out of the junk yard.

For an additional $395 I will paint in a real pretty color and then it won't look so ugly.

    Thumbs up

My son is looking at building a small foundry as a seinor project learning to cast aluminum, if that works Perhaps I can make a bronze or brass base.

Dennis, are you going to paint it with engine paint?
