Thread: Anyone use these hooks?

  1. #1

    Default Anyone use these hooks?

I bought some new Gamakatsu hooks the other day. The sales clerk warned me about how thin they are.
I like the bend, what thinking Klinkhamers, but then I noticed the eye.
Anybody have experiences with vertical eyes and do they work okay for a semi dry fly like a Klink?

Yup, those should work just fine for klinks and other emergers. Been meaning to get some of those myself for biot bodied BWO klinks. Let me know how you like tying on them.

I like the idea of a verticle eye for those type flies. Don't ask me why, I just do.

    Joni,

Do you have a source for those hooks. I can't find a supplier.

Thanks all for the source. I bought mine at a local Fly Shop.

I picked these up in Japan a couple years ago. While they are good for tying klink-style flies, the Japanese mags advertise another advantage. The idea is that if you tie only along the x-axis (i.e. not down the bend) of a #18, you are able to present a #28 sized fly with all the advantages of the larger hook. Also, the vertical eye is supposed to lift your tippet off the water to increase stealth.

None of these photos are mine but here are some examples of how Japanese tyers are using them: http://picasaweb.google.com/flyfishi...14972064576866

This is called a "poodle" and is one of their most popular summertime dries: http://www.outdoor.co.jp/mall/flysho...u/gm14-bv2.gif

I have had no problems with the eye nor its thinness. They do have super thin points so as a result, setting/playing can be a bit more sporty but I was able to adjust after a couple of outings. Also, I would hesitate hanging a dropper off the bend.

For klink-style terrestrials, I have actually switched to Varivas' T-2000 and the brand new TMC 212Y. They are a bit more stout and I feel they are more secure with hook ups.

    Thumbs up

    Joni,

I bought a lot of them a couple of years ago when a local shop closed. They are thin but strong. I have never had one fracture. Best Regards....

I bought some and used them for klinks I thought they worked well. They are very thin and light and worked well as an emerger. Although I think you can use a size smaller as they are pretty big. Hey I even managed to fool a few fish with them.
