Pennsylvania Trout

I need some information to help me plan a trip. I'll be in the Altoona, Pa. area the last week of March and I would like to find out where the best opportunities for trout fishing might be.

yellow creek bedford co. is a good stream for early season fishing but on a nice day lots of people fish it,,the little Juanita is north of altoona,,bigger stream ,

before you head out, March 1 through April 16 most PA waters are closed to trout fishing for the stocking program. April 16 is opening day. There are some areas that stay open through March.

I'm not a PA resident. However, I'm pretty sure that state does not open its trout season until the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of April. Maybe there are a few 'Catch & Release' waters that are open year round. You should check with the state's DEC to find out.

There are many, many streams open year roundfor trout in PA. About eighty of 'em. Check the summary for Penna.Fishing Regulations and Laws for 2005. I think you can find a few near Altoona.........

As a former resident of Altoona, I can say that there are a number of great spots to fish with in the area.

The Little Juniata (the Little "J") -
From I-99 outside of Tyrone take Rt 45 south, which paralles the Little J. From the iron train bridge south, there is a delayed harvest, catch and release section. This is a rather popular area, but the fishing is decent.

In Bedford County there is a flyfishing only section of Yellow Creek. This is a great area to fish, and the trout are pretty smart.

There is a public section on Spruce Creek, just north of the town of Spruce Creek that is pretty good.

In State College there is Fisherman's Paradise which has a no wadeing area.

There are no fly shops to speak of in Altoona, but Uncle Joe's Woodshop does carry flies and flyfishing supplies.

I would recommend that you stop at Flyfishers Paradise in State College. These guys are the best. They know there area well.
