Thread: Big Flies for LMB?

Thank you for the kind words on my Hard-Hackle Worm! Gigmaster, 10 inch long HHWs! Wow! All my bass HHWs are 6 inches on a 1/0.

I'll hit the Dingo this weekend and tie some 10 inchers on 2/0 hooks. Need to search my saddles for really LONG feathers first.

Good tip! Yes, purple is best for me as well!

My other go-to bass flies are the Texas BullFrog and Leech-Mouse (smaller sizes are good for bream). Both are former FOTWs here on FAOL.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers,

    Richard in hot Plano, TX

The Mustad 37187 Stinger hook is a staple for bass bugs. It comes in limited sizes (1/0, 2, 4, 6 & 10) as I recall and if you take a look at a #1/0 or #2 Stinger you will get a good feel for how large a bass bug can be. Pretty darn big.

also, here's my mouse pattern on a 1/0 hook

Perhaps I should try tying a 3/0 version as well

    Default BIG flies for LMB

I have a couple of signature patterns that I tie for LMB and SMB alike. The Mirrored Minnow is not one of my signatures, but I have fallen for this fly. Two other flies I like to tie are a Sparklin' Diver, and a Shimmering Popper.

I was out 2 weeks ago at a farm pond and caught 12 LMB just under 17" on a large yellow gurgler w/rubber legs. They love that fly another one that works good in a big chart/yellow half and half. You need at least an 8wt for that fly.

How do you know your fly had the same depth? Did you use a full sinking line? It's really hard to fly fish for bass when they are deep. Spin-fishers have the advantage in the scenario, unless you have tremendous patience.

I just tied a type of dahlberg diver recently that I would like to try, If it works I'll posts. It's has a rabbit tail, stacked deer collar, with a foam cylinder head, cut with a diving profile. Much easier than a spun deer head.

It's been my experience that LMB will hit anything that even remotely looks alive.
Big fly...big bass makes sense...but more importantly big fly translates to big hook.
Bass flies in most cases have a single hook and you're more likely to land a 5 lber on a #2 and above vs a #4 and below.
Some pretty cool patterns posted on this thread and they'll all catch bass....but then so will an unpainted, undressed cork.
In my humble opinion, a variety of flies, that will cover top to bottom, is more important then pattern per se.

BTW...although a bass may hit a floating cigarette butt...it's not stupid enough to swallow it.
