    Thumbs up First Bamboo

Well after several Grafite Rods It's time! My internal clock is ticking, time for a Bamboo Rod I guess this is the question phase.

Can you buy a blank, like you do with Graphite?

Do I realy need to buy all the Planes, jiggs, ect...?

Where is the place to buy Boo? (saw HRH Post nice Boo, was that a blank)

I guess what I need to say is HELP

    OF,
Yes, the bamboo build was indeed a blank. Elkhorn has a couple different sizes you can get, and finish off to your liking. You won't even need to second mortgage your house to afford one!! Another lovely thing about the Elkhorn blank is that you don't need a dip tank to finish the blank! It comes pre-finished, ferruled and ready to wrap. Then all you have to finish are the thread wraps! You can get the finishings (guides, reel seat, grip) from them also, and they're very nice. I didn't use them on this rod as it is "special", and I wanted a down-locking, fancy wood reel seat for it.

    I highly recommend this blank!

    Thumbs up

Ohio, I have never built a rod in my life and have only cast three or four boo rods so take this with a grain of salt and a large bevridge of your choice.

things I have learned about boo from FAOL.

You only need the planes jigs, forms etc if you wish to start with the trunk of a tree and build a rod.

there are many places to buy a blank, I have at least two manufaturers localy that would sell me one in addition to many on the net.

Elkhorn is a sponsor here on FAOL, (see the sponsor Page) there blanks are very reasonably priced and from the looks of the one Betty made are well built.

The bamboo section under features on the main page is wonderful to read even if you never want to fish or manufature a boo rod just for the information.

If you follow the links on the sponsor page to the two or three sponsors who custom build boo make sure you have somthing to wipe up the drool off your computer desk.

Ive just started a scratch build last week (third attempt for various reasons)---i got the butt section rough planed and hope to get the tip rough planed and tempered before going to michigan on the third.
If you like, we can have a beer and discuss this at great lengths.
I have 3 different rods that a friend made (5/6 wts) to peruse.

Almost all of the full time builders I've worked with sell blanks. They are also great in working with you to get the perfect taper for your casting style & needs. I would have the builder install the ferrules for you, this will make building your rod similar to building a graphite. They will also recommend guide placement to get the most from your taper.
