Thread: A Question for C&F Fly Box Users

Default A Question for C&F Fly Box Users

I am hoping the C&F Fly Box users out there can help me with a measurement or two.

I am considering trying some C&F Micro Slit inserts on the lid of one of my Richardson Box trays but before I start messing things up I need the dimensions of the inserts; not the boxes they fit in.

I THINK there are two different sizes; the regular size which fits in a box about 4" X 5" and a larger size which appears to fit in a box about 7" long.

The information I am after is:
    • What are the actual dimensions of the two different insert sizes?
    • Does the same size retaining clip fit both sizes of inserts?
I did look on the net but all I found was the dimensions of the fly boxes. I also contacted Sci Anglers but all they offered was to send me a catalog which I'm afraid won't have the insert measurements.

There isn't anyone close by who sells both sizes of the boxes and they are packaged in sealed cellophane which doesn't lend itself well to measuring without cutting open the package which won't please the fly shop if they WON'T work for me.

Any help anyone can offer will be appreciated!

    I've got the long box. Inserts are 3 1/8 x 6 3/4.

Can't help you with the dimensions or clips on the smaller size.

    Thanks guys!

I guess my 2nd question has been answered as well; the same retaining clip fits both size inserts as well.

Now it's time to do some figurin'

    Thanks again!

I'm glad to see you working on this - since our thread hijacking of a month or so ago, I haven't had time to work on this myself. If you come up with something I'd love to hear/see the results. Likewise, if I figure something out in the mean time I'll let you know.

I was at Cabelas in Hamburg several weeks back and almost bought the larger C&F inserts - but the procrastinator in me forced me to wait until next time. I didn't see the smaller inserts there.

    AnW:

    Here's the preliminary scoop:

With the measurements provided it appears the only logical application for me with my Standard Richardson Box is to consider using TWO of the smaller inserts mounted side by side on the lid of the tray I have in mind. The larger insert is both too long and too narrow to offer a good solution. Of course if I was willing to have a C&F insert that was considerably smaller than the existing foam piece I was hoping to replace; it would be a simple matter of just yanking out the old foam, attaching one of the C&F stainless steel retaining clips available as an accessory and popping in ONE of the smaller inserts. But I don't want a smaller foam piece than I have now.

The problem with using two of the smaller inserts is while they are the right height; when you place them side by side they are also too wide for my box which means I would have to "shrink" them by about 3/16" each which also isn't a big deal except I had hoped to use those C&F stainless steel clips as a method of mounting the inserts. The clips may also require some additional clearance so possibly I'll need to cut down the inserts MORE than 3/16" each which might mean that the retaining clips may not work at all if I cut down the inserts too much. Of course while other mounting options are possible; the retaining clips are the least bulky and most flexible way to secure the C&F inserts.

In any case money (within reason) & time is no object in my quest for the "perfect" solution to my fly fishing storage problems. Other than rods & reels just about every item of tackle I own has been modified so I may just bite the bullet and buy two inserts, some clips and start experimenting.

If and when I figure this out I'll let you know what I did.
