Thread: Sewing Machine Motor question

  1. #1

    Default Sewing Machine Motor question

When using a dimmer switch to control the speed of a sewing machine motor....does anyone know if you can totally remove the foot pedal and substitute a dimmer switch?...or do you have to leave the foot pedal attached?

Any other suggestions for such a setup would be appreciated too.

a universal motor---one with brushes will work with a rheostat---take the foot pedal out or use the rheostat in there---its already rated for the current draw of the motor

Thanks, Mike....I just changed out the foot pedal for a dimmer switch and it works like a charm....better than the foot pedal which was a little erratic and I wanted hand control.

There's not a whole lot on our FAOL site on this subject so I'll share these ...had to take pictures to email to a friend anyway....not displayed the best but I think you can get the idea.

I've been wanting to do this with a sewing machine motor I have for a while. So, does rheostat mean dimmer switch? And how do you go about choosing the right dimmer switch for the motor? Thanks.

Yes, the dimmer switch functions as a rheostat.

I got my dimmer switch at Wal-Mart...seemed to have the least expensive...and I got the one way.
