Trout In Minnesota
I Am Interested In Any Information On The Stream Trout In Northern Minnesota's Rivers. Are There Any Outstanding Rivers? Does Anyone Know About The Hill City Area? Stream Trout On Rivers Is Fairly New To Me(several Hour Drive). I Would Be Happy For Any Advice. Thanks

I've looked over the DNR's maps to near memory. I just dont want to make a 4-6 hour drive to step foot in a stretch of river that has no fish.

Considering your location, I'm curious, why not fish the Driftless in the southeast with well documented
fisheries and more species choices.

Same deal. 4-5 hours to get there from where we live. Cherv did fantastic last year in a prairie state park about 40 minutes from here. Stocked stuff, though. Only "wild trout" we have around here are right here. JGW
Probably the only thing you're going to find in the Hill City area are brookies.
You might want to contact the DNR...although they gave me zero help when I asked about brookie
streams in the north-central.

I grew up in your area and never fished for trout until I went to college in Bemidji. While there I fished the Straight River and the Clearwater River and enjoyed it. There were some good trout lakes in the area too. But that was over 30 years ago and I would bet that things have changed.

The Straight is still a good fishery...with a wild population of browns.
I plan to fish the Kabekona at the end of the month for wild brookies.
Haven't fished it before and plan to stay as long as it takes to get a
10-12 incher, or until the owl calls my name.
