    Default Insect repellent?

Figured this could be a good subject for a thread. Seeing as the season is approaching and well, bugs are annoying (The bitey kind).

So, how does everyone keep the bugs off/away?

Last year I hit the river one night, around 7PM, and no kidding, there were so many black flies it looked like a mass swarm. I was attacked something fierce. So I pushed my way down the river, my son and I. So anyways, I was using "OFF".

The two I usually have always used is OFF! or Muskol. Which around, are completly useless. But, while in the US last year, I picked up some Ben's. A small little pump bottle, hopefully it works good.

Remember everyone, wash your hands before touching your fly lines and such after using repellent. It'll chew through your expensive lines in no time.

Cabelas I think had some insect thingie, hangs from your vest or shirt or whatever and apparently keeps them away. Anyone try this?

Anyways, lets hear what you all use!

I just eat lots of garlic and don't shower, it keeps lots of pesky things away and I usually have anywhere I want to fish to myself

actually I use anything with lots of deet in it. Walgreen's brand works well.

I've had pretty good results with UltraThon. It's been my go to when the bugs are biting. I try and avoid using anything as long as possible but sometimes I've just got to resort to the miracles of modern chemistry and UltraThon seem to do the trick for me.

Had this e-mailed to me just yesterday.

    OK, mosquitos..

    Prepare to be repelled!!!!!

Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in
    Louisiana
..just wipe on & go..Great for Babies
Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day
April through October . He said it works. He was right.

Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it.
Every one he has talked into trying it works on them.
Vitimin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)

    If you eat bananas,
The mosquitos like you, - something about the banana oil

    As your body processes it.
Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitos
    Will be much less interested.

This is going to floor you, but one of the best
Insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods

    Every day), is Vick's Vaporub.

Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off
A smell that bugs do not like,

So plant some in that garden also to help ward
    Off bugs without using insecticides.

'Tough guy' Marines who spend a great deal of time
'camping out' say that the very best mosquito

    Repellant you can use is
Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about
    Half and half with alcohol.

One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered
Is made from the clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in
Mexico. It works great for mosquitoes and ticks,
    Don't know about other insects.

When all else fails--get a frog
Fight West Nile..pass this along to all your friends in skeeter land!!!

    They're just fish, right? Right?

The mosquitos are quite easy to keep off with some simple repellent, it's the darn black and deer flies that drive me insane.

I used to use the skin-so-soft, it's some good stuff. But the flies!! Doesn't keep them away it seems.

    Thanks for the tips!

My main repellent is a Padron Executive Maduro.

I've heard great things about UltraThon. They are also an FAOL sponsor I believe.

I actually bought some but like most repellents I buy I never use them because I have been totally brainwashed into believing all repellents are hazardous to the health of my tackle whether it is true or not.

So I guess I'll stick with the stogie!

Norman, You must be the expert on the roll cast. At first I thought you were an armchair fisherman, but I might have to install the kids swimming pool next fall and keep a few fish for the winter. LOL

    Default 3 besides DEET

Permethrin - use on clothing ONLY. There are some negative articles calling it a carcinogen.

Picaridan - used alone in Cutter's Advanced and combined with DEET in UltraThon. I have used the Cutter's and it worked well.

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) - used in Repel - I have used this more than the Cutter's and I like it very much. It works and it's natural.

I thought both the Cutters' and the Repel worked as well as anything other than 100% DEET, which I want to get away from.

    Default google "Bug shirt"

When I fish in areas with real bug problems (serious mosquitos or black flies) , I use a bug shirt. You can order them online. I think they are made in Minnesota? Anyway they are long sleeved shirts with a hood with mesh over the face area. The weave is tight and bugs can not bite through. Google "bug shirt" and you should find their web page.
