Default Anyone using a Petitjean Magic Tool

I am curious if any of you fly tiers are using or know someone who is using a Petitjeam Magic Tool? I would like to know what your thoughts are on the pros and cons of using it or do you think that I should I just stick to the dubbing loop method?

    Thanks
    Bill

I have one, but seldom use it anymore, once the "new" wore off. I still drag it out when making CDC hackle.

I see that Phil Rowley is using it for some of his chickabou patterns.

unless you buy splittable thread...your still going to be using a dubbing loop with the tool..My thought's after buying and using the tool...are I wish I'd saved the money for material's...but that is only my opinion...

I think few tools that are marked these days..beyond a vise and scissor's....are all that needed on the the tying desk...One tool I have purchased a couple years back though...that I'd recommend to those who like and Tye a lot of bullet head flies is Griffin's bullet head tool...those are a sweet little product! and are useful for more than merely bullethead's....

I use it, but mainly on some smaller flies where the amount of thread makes a difference.
It may also be that I have just not used it as much as I should.

    Cool Al's favorite

You might go back to Al Campbell's articles in the archives, or do a search on the main site on the Pettijean Magic Tool. You'll find Al was a believer *S*

Al's article and review are precisely why I purchased the tool to begin with...It is handy for smaller flies..I would suggest buying the magnum size if the brunt of your tying is for bigger sizes of flies...Say woolly buggers...and just using it for all your tying needs..smaller flies included.Wish I had!.

I like it for tying rabbit strip flies like flesh flies without the hide attached. It makes it easier to make the dubbing loop.

It's also pretty good for tying feather barbules into dubbing loops.

But, I can do everything I can with it without it, so I wouldn't buy it again.

    Red face Got one but......

Being the tool junkie that I am, I finally went ahead and bought the Magic Tool after resisting the urge for two years. I works great but I seldom use it. 8T
