For surf fishing I like to suggest a long spey rod as I use 9wt 14ft rod with Outbound line.

Try Ebay for a used brand name rod. There are always deals on heavier 2 piece rods there. The sage RPL, RPL+, RPLX, RPLXi are all great salt water rods in the 8,9,10 wts. They go for about $150. I have an RPL+ and an RPLX I use for stripers on Boston's north shore. These rods are all tip flex and can throw a clouser with sinking line a mile.

You can always get your money back selling it. A brand name rod will hold it's value.

A good reel with a disc drag ia also important for that rare trophy fish. Ebay again......Ross Gunnison 4, 5, or their older saltwater series are all in the $150 range. They are lifetime guaranteed even if you aren't the original owner.

    just my 2 cents

90% of my New England saltwater fishing is done with a 9' 9wt rod with intermediate line. It's by far my favorite set-up for stripers, blues, bonita & false albacore
The man who coined the phrase "Money can't buy happiness", never bought himself a good fly rod!

Well, here's what I ended up getting today.
St. Croix Legend Ultra rod, 9', 9wt (3 pc)
St. Croix Legend Large Arbor reel (LFR910B) plus spare spool
    Airflo 7000TS WF9F line
    Teeny Saltwater Intermediate line 9wt
    LL Bean stripping basket
    15 assorted flies

Got a great deal on this setup...the rod was used 5 times and the reel and lines have never seen water..likewise the stripping basket. How'd I do? I think I'll be fine.

I think you did well, ausable. I do love my Legend Ultra 8 weight. I use it for floating lines and a nine weight for the sinking heads.

albies are pretty tough---i had 3 almost spool me with 300yds on a 10 wt scott last thanksgiving---i lost 2 tightening up the drag on a super 8 abel and another we chased and landed ---about 15 pounders---

the guide in the boat next to us got spooled a couple times too but we were in a bunch of amberjack then---his client hooked one up on a small blue on a 50# outfit and broke it off after a grueling 45 minute battle.

I agree and disagree with Greg F.
The 3 Forks for the salt is too soft. I know that they are expensive, but something akin to the FT or LST would be better suited.
