    Default Fly Attacked.

I recently went fishing and had the
    following experience, which was, at
    least for me, unique.
I had been fly fishing for bass and
panfish off of the end of a dock.
when I was gathering up equipment to
go home I noticed a commotion at my feet.
I looked down and witnessed the following.
A terrestrial fly that I had dropped by accident was lying on the wood and
being eaten by ants. Two of the four
rubber legs had been chewed off and the ants
were busily chewing down to the hook itself.
The ants clearly figured, like the fish, that this was a tasty meal for the taking.
I rescued the fly (after beating off the ants with my net handle- well, not quite-)
and swore to be more carefull about dropping
    flies by accident again.
The victim of the attack is being repaired.
I thought I would share this little adventure with you and my grandkids.
I swear its true. All of it.
I have encountered skunks, deer and a mountain lion (at a distance) during my
fishing adventures, but never ants who
chewed on my flies instead of me.

    Ed,

I've never experienced anything like that befor nor have I heard of anyone else. Perhaps the fly had been used and still had some fish slime/smell on it that attracted the ants. Either way, I don't think I'd take a long afternoon nap on that dock

Sounds to me just a simple case of a well tied fly. I figure if you can fool ants then you must be doing something right.

What terrestrial was it? I get attacked by fire ants when I'm walking the bank at some ponds around here and thought I'd tie up a few and drop them along the bank so the ants would eat them instead of me. Besides, one of the kids down the street wants to start an ant farm.
Have you ever seen how long it takes fire ants to devour an unintentionally dropped piece of fried chicken? It's amazing. They have to be related to piranhas.

The fly was a Madame X.
I was drinking my own well water, which
    is regretably, non-alcoholic.
