Thread: Mono wraps

    Default Mono wraps

Getting mentally prepared to build my first rod. Just wondering if anyone uses mono - like in tippet material - instead of thread for wrapping the guides, etc.

Thanks in advance for anything from your experience, or just your thoughts about how or why it would or wouldn't work.

Hello JohnScott, you've got me wondering if you're after the 'no wrap look' so that you just see the guides but can see the blank through the wraps?

    Cheers,

Pretty much what I had in mind.

Any thoughts on how it would work ??

I'm sure you'll get a lot more educated and experienced answers than mine, but the short answer is no-I don't think so. When you wrap your guides, I think you need the tension of the thread against itself to hold your wraps together. However, you can try this on a sample piece of old graphite, if you have it, or a graphite arrow you might be able to pick up at a garage sale. You will want to have this on hand for future trials. Do you know that "look" can be had by not putting Color Preserver on your wraps?

Wrap the guides with white silk. Finish with Flex Kote and they will end up transparent. You will see the blank color through them.

    Brad -

That was right on the money. Also solved another problem for me - I flat out don't want to use acetone. Had no idea that denatured alcohol would be an alternative for working with and cleaning up Flex Coat.

One step closer to putting together what I need for my first build.

Thanks much for the reply and the link.

I've had very good results with ThreadMaster light with white silk adding no thinner. I like Cabela's disposable brushes#A, 24 brushes for $3.99. I cut about half of the bristles off to make the brush the right size for this, IMO.
If at first you don't succeed,go fishing, then try, try again.

Regular household vinegar will clean up flex coat and any other epoxy based finish....
