Stonefly wing cases

It's getting close to Stonefly time, and I have never liked the way my wing cases look - I see the ones that are nice and broad across the thorax, and then little tiny at the tie-in, but the only way I can get mine broad across the back is to tie them in kind of around the hook, and then they look funny. Can someone clue me in?

I tie them in like this, this is thin skin, so its really easy to work with




You also need a broad body, otherwise the case will wrap itself around it..thats why i try to make my cases just thinner then the body

Have you tried using 'Tyvec'? Cut to shape and colored with a permanent marker it handles well and makes a pretty good wingcase.

At one time, I only liked mottled turkey for my stones. Since then, I've settled on Swiss Straw for my "beater" flies. It's readily available & cheap. And it doesn't shred apart like turkey.

Although it lacks the natural mottling, tan or brown Swiss Straw can be artificially mottled with a few, quick swipes with a darker, Prismacolor marker.

These weren't mottled, but at least you can see the prominent wingcases.

When I worked for a greeting card company they made black ribbon in 3/4" width. This is the smooth, not krinkly ribbon that is easy to cut to any size and folds very well. One spool will last a long time.
