Thread: Czech Nymphing for bass.....

    Default Czech Nymphing for bass.....

    Well, sort of.

I've been playing with a warm water variation of the czech nymphing technique.

Heavy jig type fly with a baitfish pattern about 12 inches above it (both weedless).

Long, level leader that's about 1 1/4-1 1/2 the rod length.

Fish with the fly line just out the rod tip.

Swing the fly to the target underhand, similar to the conventional tackle 'flipping' technique, but without feeding any line. After the flies hit the water, you follow them down with the rod tip (like following the current in czech nymphing) keeping the line just 'taught'. After the flies hit the bottom, jiggle them a few times, then lift and make another presentation to the next target.

Not sure if it's 'fly fishing' (if czech nymphing is, this should be too..?) but it will be very effective for fishing for bass along a cover line, like a tule bank, reeds, things where the depth is pretty constant and you can work along it.

In any event, just thought Id share and invite your thoughts.

Sounds like it would work great. Unfortunately, we can only use one fly when bass fishing here in Minnesota. Rules out a popper and a dropper also.

Buddy, sounds like crappie fishing down in Alabama or Georgia using a crappie pole.

Default Something I Might Like to Try

I fish along the edges of lily pads and reed beds a lot for bluegills and bass and I've been looking for a way to avoid getting snagged all the time by those maddening lily pads and yet get my fly in as close as possible. I still might snag the stem below the water but I'll give it a try anyhow.

Thumbs up Some other structures too!

    Buddy,

I like it. It sounds like an excellent way to fish docks and their walkways. Also bridge supports. 8T

    Buddy,

Been tossing around a similar idea with some fishing buddies for a while but haven't progressed to actually trying it. We were thinking of it more in terms of dropshotting with a fly rod. About the only difference to our thoughts and yours was the terminology used - czech nymphing vs dropshotting.

We had also considered using a shorter leader with a sinking line and making longer casts to work the two fly combo back in the same types of areas where you might fish a carolina rig. Haven't tried that yet either.

Should also be a good way to work vertical drops and channels as well in the bigger lakes. And yes, I'd say it was still flyfishing.
If it swims and eats, it'll eat a fly.

It should work well. I think that way to often we do not fish close enough to ourselves.
We need to work the close water before we do the water farther out.

That ought to work quite well. I was going to complain that you get to fish while we're so cold here but looks like McKinney TX and Tucson AZ are right about the same place weather-wise
