    Cool Caribou Uses

I have a patch of Caribou fur I purchased sometime ago and have used it to tye some "Caribou Caddis" in place of elk hair. I was wondering if anyone had any other particular patterns where they have used caribou? It is softer than elk hair and floats very well.

    Thanks.

I've used Caribou for tails, and/or wings, where deer or elk has been called for.
"Just cuz I had it", and for no other, real, reason really. Although the boo I have is very light in color so it does make a nice "sight visual" type fly when used as a wing.
Unfortunately, at least MINE anyway, is not as hardy as deer hair and not even close to as durable as elk. So, I haven't used it all that often.

Spun and clipped dry fly bodies, like 'Irresistables', Goddard Caddis' or similar. Caribou hair is easy to work with in these applications.

Great for spinning bass bug type flies!!

A bit softer than deer, so the bugs are softer but float just as well (or better). Sounds a bit different in the water.

Also an excellent material for any large extended body mayflies like green drakes.
