    Default gudebrod rod finish

I have several spools of thread that I would like to try on scrap pieces, but don't want to mix a batch of epoxy to see how they would look - would u-40 permagloss or gudebrod rod finish work to give me a picture of how they might look?

I have a piece of bamboo, and a piece of graphite, that I will try out various threads on, to check for color changes when finish is applied. I'll usually do enough of a color, or combinations of color, to try some plain, and some with color preserver. I do try to use the finish that will be used on the rod I'll be doing, so I know what it will look like. If you use the syringe measurement, you can mix small quantities without waste.

Stop by any sporting goods store that sells graphite arrows, and you might get some damaged ones cheap. You could tie about 1/2" - 3/4" bands of each color you have, and do this twice on the shaft. Coat one batch with CP and the other with Flax Coat so the wraps are translucent. Now you have a "story pole" of your threads so you'll know how each color looks for future reference.

Canola oil. It will look just like when finish hits it. Wipe it off and try another.

Thanks, Jim, the canola oil was what I was looking for - something simple to just get an idea - like this pretty rayon thread I got that might not be good for wraps at all.

    Herefishy,

Water also works, if you are considering using the wraps without CP.

Careful with rayon. It can have finish problems.

That's what I have heard, but people just say try some sample wraps and see what it does. Will putting water on the wraps show up the problems, if any?
