Thread: Securing Tag?

    Default Securing Tag?

Question: If you consider the eye of the guides to be the top, where do you place the tag end as you start to wrap the winds and the tag as you complete the wraps? Do you hold the tag end alongside the foot of the guides, 1/2 way towards the opposite side of the blank, or on the opposite side? Oh, and maybe this doesn't matter, but I'm talking about winding onto a graphite blank.

    Thanks.

I like to place the tags at 90 degrees to the guide, which I believe is what you are calling half way towards the opposite side of the guide. As you complete the wrap on the guide foot, you DO NOT want the tag to be along side of the guide foot. If you look closely at the profile of the guide foot against the rod surface, you will see that there is a gap where the foot meets the blank. This is a weak spot for holding thread, unless you have filed the foot to closely match the radius of the blank, which most people do not do.

I start the wrap with the tag end lined up with the end of the guide foot since you have several wraps before you actualy get to the foot to hold it down. To end the wrap, I pull it in 1/2 way around the blank, i.e. 90 degrees from the guide foot.

Thanks guys. That's where I usually place the beginning tag on the graphite rods I've builtand intend on building. One reason for my question was that I was looking at a few photos of bamboo rods with transluscent wraps. I didn't see any tags so I was wondering where they were, position wise, and was curious if there was a 'general rule of thumb' about graphites.
