Thread: Travel Fly Rod

  1. Default Travel Fly Rod

I'm looking to purchase a travel fly rod for freshwater trout. Any suggestions about a good travel rod?

Just about any 4-piece to 7-piece rod in 4-5wt will fit the bill. I built a 9'-0" 4wt 7-piece that travels well, and can throw small hair bugs for bass when necessary. Cost around $100 to build it. From a purchase standpoint, Cabelas Stowaway series in 5-piece or 7-piece are a good travel rod. If you purchase the combo you'll save some money. The rods alone with a tube start around $105 for the 5-piece and go up to $165 for the 9'-0" 5wt 7-piece. The 7-piece rods are currently on sale.

    Hope this helps.

I agree with Joe, cabellas sells good rods and kits.

Tell us more about yourself, what rods do you have now that you like? How long have you been fishing? How much do you want to spend?

when you say travel is this Harley or Jet?

A little more information and you will get better educated sugestions.

BTW welcome to FAOL, but be warned this site can be addicting

OK, my favorite brand is BMO (build my own). I love my 9'-0" 4wt 7-piece Forecast...

    ...and also my 7'9" 3wt 4-piece.

Redington has a great 6 piece travel rod series called the Wayfarer. They start with a 7 foot 3 weight and go up to a 9 foot 9 weight. They cast well are guaranteed for life. Check them out at:

I own several of the Cabelas 'Stowaway' 5pc rods, they are a great casting rod for just a little over a hundred bucks.
They give my $600 Winston rods a run for the money! Plus I don't worry as much about loosing one if I lend it out or have a boating mis-hap.
