Black hills in march?

Hey all I have a couple of questions regarding the hills also. Me and a buddy are still working on planning our spring break trip for this coming march. We are leaning towards the fryingpan and roaring fork area but the hills look interesting as well. What is the weather like in the hills in the middle of march??? Would you recommend a trip at this time or would we be better off in colorado. The hills would be a shorter drive for us as we live in southeast minnesota. Any comments would be great.

Hi Reiny,
I live in Iowa and have made semi-regular trips to the Hills all times of the year. My experience: March is a crap shoot but worth the plan. The Hills have a micro-climate and it seems you can consistently catch pretty good weather. I've fished in a light jacket there in March more than I've been "frozen" or snowed out. The Hill temps seem mild while the drive over the plains can be brutal. I love SD in the winter. It can be spectacular. As it is the off-season you can book reasonable hotels (if that's your pleasure) and you'll find solitude. Others on the board can answer better but those are my experiences.

I thought Betty and I made it clear there aren't any trout in S. Dakota

The only constant in S. Dakota weather is that it's fairly unpredictable. Heat waves in February; 18" of snow in April. There will be fishable spots no matter when you come. The weather will determine how many. You should be fine.
