A nice simple fly, easy to tie and no doubt will catch fish.
But the basic pattern has been around for quite a while.
Some with a little more elaboration.

Donald,
I agree. I've been spending some time on the UK Flydressing site and buzzers are bountiful there. Some very simple and some more complex. All seem to be very useful.
I am learning a new language there. Something called English. Very fascinating.

Happiness is wading boots that never have a chance to dry out.
This is the most minimalist version of the midge pupae I've seen! I gave what can only be described as a very overdressed version in comparison (peacock herl head, silver rib, red floss neck band, white tail and breathing filaments, but black body) to a friend of my dad's who then went out and ended up catching something like 35 or so brook trout over two sessions with it (on days when nobody else on the river was having any luck). The fly was destroyed by the teeth after that, so I sent my dad 2 dozen more.
Personally, I've not had that level of luck with them but I have hooked into some good fish with them (lost a 3+lbs brown at the net on one; but landed a 2.5 lbs rainbow after that), but then I've not really given them a chance (only fished them a few times and keep meaning to give them a more thorough study when I get the chance). I know I've tied up a fair number in different colours, so I suppose I should tie them on the line soon.

I'm thinking punch yarn might work very well for this fly...could even unravel it if necessary.
I say thank you to the fellow who explained how he came about the fly and the success he has had. And then went to the trouble to show us all about it.
I don't care how many similar patterns there have been. So what.
Thank you sir for posting your work and explaining it's origin. Well done.
Thank you for your efforts. Thank you very much for a job well done.
I for one am greatful. I am not one of those who already knew about this type of fly or all it's relatives.
Thanks again sir.
Why make a SIMPLE pattern more complex? it obviously catches fish. Nothing needs to be done.Originally Posted by ducksterman
ducksterman,
Using punch yarn would turn it almost into Andy Kim's Yong Special. He uses sewing thread, I believe. Another very effective midge pattern.
