Thread: Question from rods and rod building. Orvis, What do I have?

  1. #1

Default Question from rods and rod building. Orvis, What do I have?

I just picked up an Orvis rod and dont have a clue what I have here .
Is it old or not ?
Is it worth much more than I paid for it? (I got it at a thrift store for $2!!!!)
This rod comes in an aluminum tube that looks like its been all over the world. The rod looks like its hardly been out of the tube (I mean this rod looks premo)!
    Graphite 7 1/2 ' 2 1/8 oz 6 wt.
There is no printing on the rod itself. The printing is on the butt cap.
The rod case is printed with the rod info also .
Any clues about this rod and its relative value?

(Same thrift store let a Fenwick {Fenglass} go for $2 and a Heddon {I think it was } go for $2. I met the guy who got them and he didnt even fly fish!!!!!!
He said that both rods looked brand new!!!!!
I was told that the heddon was worth several hundred (or what ever it wsa ) was worth several hundred by an aquaintence who is an expert on Bamboo rods( who also missed on the Fen . and the Boo).
Story of my life , one day late and another dollar short.
I do think its cool that I scored a really nice looking orvis for $2!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what you have but I'm sure it's worth $2. Heck, the case alone would be worth that.

    The cap also says" Orvis,7 1/2' ,2 1/8 oz. (6) Graphite.
The rod is gray in color . The guides look like they are being held on by tape and not thread but upon close examination it is a tread wrap .
I tried taking photos but cant get very good resolution so will have to work on that .
The reel seat appears to be aluminum. There is a double ring system going on here where one ring screws down to put pressure onto a non threaded ring to hold the reel.
Not being very familiar with correct terms please bear with me. The hook holding loop is 90 degrees offset from the guides in the counter clockwise direction.
The first guide up from the reel is not all metal and the guide at the tip is not all metal. Perhaps ceramic?
The label on the tube is kind of a maroon color and the rod bag is red/maroon also. The specs for the rod that are on the tube are stamped into the lable and are not printed or typed. The screw in cap is black and does not have the Orvis name.

I took it out for a cast or two yesterday and it feels sloooowwww for a graphite to me but a fellow that was there teaching casting gave it a whirl and he grew a prety big grin pretty darn quik. Said he liked the way it picked up the line . I was getting some pretty good distace out of it , and then the teacher showed me what the rod would really do!! I feel my mediocrety very often.
I figure on bring this rod to the Missouri fish in adn see if anybody there can put a name and time line on it .
    Any ideas would be helpfull.
I am not looking for a dollar figure on this rod.
I wont part with this one its a pretty sweet little rod.
Also, how may folkes can say that they have a 2 dollar Orvis rod?
    Thanks ,
    Perch

p.s on the rod tube the label does not say " 6wt" .
the engraving/stamp reads "HDG (6) as in
    Length: 7 1/2 ft.
    Weight: 2 1/8 oz.
    For: ORVIS-HDG (6)
(as stamped on the lable on the rod tube)

I asked Orvis about an older rod that said Graphite on it. They told me it was an old Superfine.

You can call Orvis and ask them. I do it all the time with many rods of different makes.

Rod may be an early graphite rod from the mid-1970's when Orvis first offered graphite fly rods & they were going by the old line weight designation, but not in the ads. Back issues of Fly Fisherman Magazine would be a good reference to find exactly what rod model it is. The ceramic inserts on the tip top guide may be a replacement, the stripping guide may be original with a ceramic insert. Great buy !

Those older Orvis rods were slow... that is where the Far-n-fine came. They are sweet rods and I can guarantee, it is worth more than $2. There is a bunch of guys that would kill for the old Far-n-fine.

Is the two sections even length?

The 7 1/2' 2 1/8 oz. 6-weight first appeared in the 1976 Orvis catalog. I've never fished that particular model, but all the first-generation Orvis graphites were great rods in my experience. They got it right the first time around.

"Can I have my rod back yet?"

" Fly Goddess yells NO IT'S MINE NOW! clenching it tightly to her, snarling under her breath"

"It is MY rod you know.....(reaching for his far and fine back)"

"NO! Fly goddess yells biting his hand as he reaches for the rod."

" Okay Okay Okay, You can have the rod...I dont even want it....He says backing away slowly...."

Fly goddess strokes her newly aquired fly rod, While saying "The precious...I have the precious...It is my precious. Stroking the cork of her new rod.
