Thread: Panfish Flies

    Default Panfish Flies

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has any good panfish flies that are suitable for a 3 weight rod. I will probably be chasing Crappie and LMB mostly. Oh, and it will be at a large lake, so if anybody has any suggestions, please post 'em!

    Thanks, Nenbran

Look in the panfish archives for Ricks Favorite bluegill or crappie flies.
Also look in the fly of the week for the boa yarn leeches among other flies.

    Hi Nenbran,

A couple more, besides what Rick lists are: a #10 or #12 bugger with no hackle, an orange tail, and an olive chenille body, and the hot flash minnow. Both of these can easily be handled with a three weight.

    Regards,

A couple flies that will catch panfish and LMB are the Improved Black Gnat and the Improved McGinty. I like size #12.

    Hi Nenbran,

I like to catch my panfish on the top in warm weather. I use Gurgle Pops in chartreuse, yellow and white on a size #12 hook (use a dry fly hook or the small ones won't float long). I have also come to appreciate the Griffith Gnat in sizes #12 and #14. Be sure to debarb all your bluegill flies for easy hook removal. The Griffith Gnat is ideal for a light rod and my #2 weight casts the Gurgle Pops easily as well. 8T

BRW, I also fish a huge, deep Corps of Engineers impoundment, Lake Hartwell in SC.

I tied up the black marabou leech that Rick had in fly of the week (will be in the previous flys of the week) in yellow size 10 & 12 and have been hammering crappie with it. This may be a yellow marabou leech but you would have to check with Rick on that. Anyway its an easy tie and effictive fly.

I carry two types of bluegill/redear flies with me and that is it. I carry jigged bream bugs for fishing deep and bream bugs tyed on size 10 and size 12 dry fly hooks for fish in shallower water.
