Thread: neoprene wading socks worth it?

  1. #1

Default neoprene wading socks worth it?

I am wondering if neoprene wet wading socks (Simms, Orvis, Cabela's) are worth the purchase and why. Are there alternatives. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Dear nuthatch,

In my mind they are. With a thick pair of old wool socks and the neoprene booties over them you can pretty much approximate the fit of your wading boots like when you wear them your stocking foot waders. They also help to keep gravel and rocks out of your wading shoes which definitely increases my comfort level. I spent a lot of time over the years pulling off my wading shoes and dumping out the gravel while wet wading.

    Regards,
    Tim Murphy

I like the neoprene socks for the same reasons stated as Tim Murphy.

I like them too. Use them when it's too cold to wet wade and too hot for waders. They were also nice on the flats under my flats boots.

I had a pair years ago and used them with wading shoes and lightweight waders. Under the lightweights I used long underwear then fleece and ended up with a nylon/cotton shell. A pair of thin raw wool socks seemed to help when conditions got really cold and winter steelheads were the target species.

In my experience this set up was ok for water temps down into the 30s. When I got a pair of insulated bootfoot breathables, I lost track of the neoprene booties...I think that they may have walked off with a fishing friend. They are inexpensive and there are other uses for them too.

    Nuthatch,

    K-mart and Walmart also
    have 'em.
    Price is better too.
    They are a seasonal item,
fall is best time to look.

Just signed on after ordering my second pair from Cabela's and saw your post. Like 'em for all the previously stated reasons and think they're worth it.

always wear them when wet wading. i on;y have a pair of Orvis sandals and the setup has served me very well in both Colorado streams and Texas coast. i do get a goofy sock tan when i wear shorts but after my girlfriend got stung by a jellyfish a few weeks ago, i'm all about pants.

edit: i have the Brooks socks made for kayaking and rafting and such.
