Thread: Tippets Brand

  1. #1

    Default Tippets Brand

Curious if anyone has a preference on the brand of tippet they use. Is one better then the other? Factor in cost?

Orvis, Rio, Maxima, How about Cabela's?? Climax etc.... etc..

    Thanks,
    Ken

I've been buying Cabela's house brand because of cost.
    Its made by Climax (Cortland)
I find no fault with it.

Mono - Orvis Super Strong; I've been a fan since it first came out, I'd use it exclusively if I hadn't fell in love with fluoro.

Fluoro - Any of these brands is excellent and are the only brands I'll buy:

1 - Seaguar Grand Max - super strong, no complaints, not cheap

2 - Varivas - same deal, just harder to find, a pretty good value

3 - Rio Fluoroflex Plus - also excellent but not available in 8X which I do use, pricey

4 - Orvis Mirage - excellent strength and the best value in Fluoro out there

All of the tippet material I use is limp, strong for its diameter; has great knot strength and stretchability and I combine Fluoro tippets with mono intermediate sections with NO issues. I've tried many other brands but these are all I use now.

I use different ones for different fishing situations. You need to see which ones you like for each type of fishing. There is a wide range of, stiffness, stetch, sink rate, BS, abrasion, coating, quality, tolerance and price in them.

I like Rio powerflex for my trout fishing. Bass or even streamers for trout, I prefer something stiffer like maxima, or some type of saltwater tippet material. If my local shop carried Frog Hair, I might opt for that over the Rio. The only time I used it I really liked it.

I use Climax flouro-carbon leaders and tippet material because it is strong, invisible, and made a high quality standard. I also like stiffer materials to punch through the never-ending SE Idaho wind.
