Thread: Herring Creek Reservoir in Toulumne County (California)

Default Herring Creek Reservoir in Toulumne County (California)

I am headed to Pinecrest Lake resort with my family this week. I was thinking I might try Herring Creek Reservoir and the surrounding area. Has anyone fished this area? Can you tell me a little about it? Thanks.

I haven't had a chance to fish that far up yet but I'd love to hear how it went for you once you're back.

I was fishing Saturday near Jamestown on private water and had a blast. I don't think that's close enough though to help you out. Olive wooly buggers (with or without bead heads) and frog poppers were doing well. The area had plenty of frogs and damsel flies.

You might take a peek at the Fish Sniffer maps archive and see what they have (since they cover CA, they likely have info for the places you mentioned).

Also, the Mother Lode Fly Shop in Sonora probably has some good info. Nice little shop right on the main road through town with friendly folks working there. Last time I was in that shop, they had a big list of what was fishing well...on the wall behind the cash register I think.

    Good luck!

    Thwack,

Here is a response I got from another board.

    "Hey Marty
I used to fish Herring creek quite a bit years back. You can usally find a few rising fish in the mornings and evenings but it is more of bait fishing lake.

Herring Creek (a very small creek), running out of the lake can be pretty good for small trout 4"-6" with the standard attractor dries.

    Have a good time."

The creek sounds like it may be something I would want to check out.

Thanks for the followup. If you go, please let me know if it was worth the effort.

    Tyronne,
It's been years since I was in that neck of the woods, but check out Hell's Half Acre, I think it's the Tuolumne near Strawberry? Lot's of Brookies up there.
