    Default Universal Fly

Back in the mid-sixties I lived in Oregon for a year or so. One day I ran into an older gentleman on a stream. He told me he only used one fly; a Coachman. He showed me his fly boxes. He had Coachman dries from about size 10 through 18. Wets from about 8 through 18, and some large Coachman type streamers, and nymph patterns from about size 12 through 16 or so.He said that was all he needed to catch fish. "It simplified matters," he said. He was a pleasant chap, we talked a bit and then went our separate ways. I never saw him again.

Over the years, I've often thought of trying his method out for one season. I haven't done so yet.

    Maybe next year?

    Bob,

I guess if I could have ONLY ONE fly for all my waters, ... salmon, sea run trout and resident trout in rivers and lakes, ... I use a Muddler Minnow (classic) in sizes 14 to 0
