    Cholcomb13,

Not sure if moving the bead would work better or not. Looks fine where it is. Yup, yup, peacock herl is a definate fish attractor. (Don't tell anyone else about this fly, but the Doc Sprately has both peacock herl and pheasant tail fibers. A deadly combination. Keep it under your hat. Jeff almost let it slip to everyone.)

Jeff, I ran out of Puk feathers a couple years ago. Aren't cow cockeys allowed to dispatch Pukeko that are messing up the water for cattle? Maybe a friendship with one would be a source of the feathers. Didn't know any shop could sell those feathers.

Portly Gentleman under an umbrella. Perfect description of a Scotch Poacher.

    REE,
Thanks for saying "KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT!"
I haven't heard that for a long time.

    Hi REE,

You are allowed to shoot Pukeko during duck season, and farmers are allowed to shoot them if they are destroying crops, etc. It's just that there is only one shop that has a licence to sell the feathers. I'm not sure if other stores just don't bother, or if the shop is allowed due to some grandfather clause in the law? So, it's not that hard to come by the feathers (especially since they are a common road kill as well).

Ok, I've found a couple Pukeko flies to take pictures of. The Scotch Poacher, which I suppose translates to "Whiskey Thief", as apposed to a "Scots Poacher", which would be someone who steals people in kilts I guess? Anyway, this is a very popular night time fly, tied quite large (again, size 4 hooks are common), and pulled slowly along the bottom. Perhaps taken as a koura (crayfish) or a large water beetle, nobody really knows.

Another popular fly tied in this basic "style" is Craig's Nighttime. I think this is supposed to use a black feather from the pukeko rather than the blue one. As the name implies, this is considered a nighttime fly.

Both of these are typically fished at a river mouth.

The next fly is just one I put together trying to make something that sort of looked like a Spey style fly. The long hackles are a black Pukeko feather. I've not fished this, but others with the same idea I have and they look good in the water (lots of movement), but so far no luck with them. Must try them with more confidence next time.

    Jeff,

Oooh, Ooooh, nice flies. Craigs Night Time looks like a killer. Very nice use of the puk feather.

Your spey looks pretty good too. Again, creative use of the Pukeko feather.
