Thread: Master Fly Tier

    Default Master Fly Tier

Just a curious type question. Who bestowes the distinction of Master Fly Tier and what exactly have they done to achieve that title?

I think there is a thread or two about this in the BB archives. I suspect someone will dig it up and post the link soon.

But I am pretty sure it involves grasshoppers.

I actually do. It's sorta like the International Star Registry

    Send me $150 to:

You Too Can Be a Master Fly Tyer
    P.O Box 2396
    New York, NY 10001

Enclose the name of the fly tyer along with the check or MO.

I also can anoint you a master fly fisherman or caster for an additional $100.

BUT WAIT, order right now and get TWO Master Fly Tyer certifications for only $150! That's a $300 value!!

ORDER NOW and we'll include a Popeil Pocket Fisherman or a Bell & Howell Sonic Ear, for only shipping and handling!

    Get yours TODAY!

I think the point some of us are trying to make is that this isn't a skill that is regulated by some governing body, who has the authority given to them by their membership and so forth to anoint masters. I suppose if there was a fly tying guild, with apprentices, and so forth...

Such a system only works if everybody buys into it, and acepts it as valid. As long as a large percentage of the people involved in the sport consider themselves independent of authority and regulation, there is no validity to defined status. You can call yourself the pope, but if nobody ELSE calls you the pope, what difference does it make?
