Thread: Little trick for Egg patterns

Default Little trick for Egg patterns

I was tying up egg patterns for steelhead for a couple guys that go up to Salmon river in Ny. They asked me to tie them a durable egg, so I came up with this idea to modify the trusty Blue goo pattern. Insted of using uni-thread in fire orange I decided to use orange Kevlar, and insted of yellow chenille I decided on 7mm yellow irridescent craft pom-poms. The guys used them and they said they are great! What do you think about them ?

    Cool fly.

Yes, Kevlar is the way to go since you have to pull so hard to puff up the yarn. They have egg yarn out which is pretty neat. Also, Kaufmann puts out a yarn to make eggs, too.

yeah I know several companies out there make glo bug yarns, I like Mcfly foam for most of my eggs. It ties better than glo bug yarn. But these craft pom poms I came into are fast and darn near indestructable, and they come in plain and irridescnt wich have opal estaz fibers sticking ou of them. They work good and I just ordered 1110 of them for $15 on ebay. (LOL) I guess I'll be ready when they ask for more eggs!

    Dragon,

    Pretty fly!

I've been taking two of the small (5mm?) red pompoms and just CA gluing them together with the hook in between.

Caught lots of fish on them, but they aren't anywhere as pretty as yours.

    Good Luck!

Some wild colors! I tie the egg with McFly and then singe the edges with a cauterizer. Then tie on the estaz/cactus chenille in pearl or pink.

I've been using the pon pons for a couple of years. They work at times. I still like the color selections better that you have in the egg yarns.
