    Default 1492 medalist

Does Pflueger make a 1492 left or right hand retrieve? I have watching ebay and read the article here on FAOL. Don't seem to see any. Maybe I am missing something.

The catalog I have says the 1492 and 1492 1/2 are right hand only.

I fished Pfluegers left handed wind for years. To the best of my fading memory they are easily changed from right to left.

I don't think the 1492s are...I think you have to get to the 1494 or 1494 1/2 to have reversible.

That is correct 1492 in right hand only the line guide bars will not mount on the other side of the reel. lol it was never a big deal for me .. being left handed.

I have a 1494 which I bought a couple of years ago. I researched and found that the 1494 was the smallest of that series that could be converted for both left and right handers.

Being a lefty I converted the 1494 to my use (rod in left hand - reel with right). I use the 1494 on 3, 5, and 7 weight rods with no problem.

Perhaps the 1494 would fit your needs.

    Dear big brown,

I'm not sure, but I think some people may be confusing adjustable drag with left/right retrieve.

The 1492 as currently made only has a click drag that is non-adjustable but I am almost certain you can flip the ring in the center of the reel body to change the direction of retrieve. You can easily remove the screws that hold the line guard on a current reel, or a reel from the 1950's for that matter, and flip them around. As I understand things, only the round line guard models cannot be reversed.

Maybe I'm all wet, it wouldn't be the first time and it for darn sure won't be the last.

    Good luck.

    Regards,

I used to own two of the older made in the USA 1492s--neither was changeable to left hand wind regardless of what you did. The others 1494 and up--were all changeable

    Hello Big Brown,

The 1492 and 1492 1/2 are right-hand retrieve models only. The line guards can't be switched easily (no screw holes). If you reverse the pawls on the inside and then drill new holes on the other side of the frame, you can reverse a 1492. But now you defaced the reel and its value.

If you are interested in Pflueger Medalist history, please read my history article here on FAOL:
