Can someone tell me what the terms single-built and double-built mean with regard to bamboo? Also, is there a source for caps to those old aluminum rod tubes?
single built
Most trout rods are considered "single built" to the point that it's never even mentioned. This means that a single layer of bamboo makes up each radius of the blank. So, a six strip rod is made up of six triangular strips glued together lengthwise. Each strip having enough power fibers to support the rod from the central apex to the outer flat (hang with me). A "double" built rod means that the fiber thickness wasn't enough to span the distance from inside to outer edge, so each strip was made in two layers. This is usually only seen on very large, heavy, rods. In this case, they would plane a strip of bamboo into a rectangle which contains all of the functional power fibers. They would then do this to a second strip and glue it on top of the original - sort of a power fiber sandwhich. The new laminated strip would then be planed into the normal triangular strip (this process repeated for all strips). So the finished section of a six strip rod is actually composed of 12 laminated strips of cane. Clear as mud?
