    Default cabelas fly tying kits???

looking at getting a fly tying kit. i have heard that the kits that u get in walmart or other stores like that are not the best quality. i see that cabelas has a number of kits. just wondering which would be a good starter kit or are there any other kits out there that i should look at.

I started with one of Cabelas flytying kits I put it to good use too. It came with one of their A vises along with a good supply of materials to get you started. Just remember that you will probably become addicted and will have to find some type of therapy soon after. I would recommend their kits but make sure to check with the sponsors and shop around.

    Nate,

A friend ot one at Walmart. The vise wasn't the best in the world, then again, for now, ... anything that'll hold the hook will do.

Many will say go to a shop and buy stuff individualy. A kit will have enough stuff to get started.

Just remember when you compare prices, the US$ exchange rate is a killer.

While looking for a kit, think about the flies you'd like to start with. Some kits are geared toward certain types of flies (good idea).

p.s.: Man, ... You ARE HOOKED

I recall a discussion about kits on another forum, and most people bagged the idea. I started with an english tying kit and it was a great way to start in my opinion. Virtually nothing was wasted and it got me going in to tying very easily. I added bits and pieces as I progressed, upgraded to better quality tools etc gradually. I like the cabellas stuff too. Go for it, and enjoy yourself.

    Gringo (& Nate),

I did too start out with a very modest kit (Not shrink wrapped... One put together by Moe Bradly in Kamloops).

I used (eventually) everything in it too. The vise still works and the youngster (then) that I gave it to said he will be giving it to his nephew soon.

I saw a few threads about kits vs a good basket full of stuff in a qualified shop. All depends I guess.

Nate, ... You going to be tying flies for trout ??

I use cabela's fly tying materials and they seem to be of good quality. Their kits seem to be of decent quality as well.
