breaking tips

i've heard that you can break the tip of your fly rod with a fly that is too heavy. Does anyone know what the weight of the fly would have to be to break a 5wt. rod. This may be a dumb question, but i don't want to break my rod. Maybe someone can inform me, maybe not.

a simple bead head or cone head fly can put a nick in the composite material and eventually it will break. doesn't take much.

not sure there is any scientific evidence to answer your question with accuracy.

If you can cast the fly with the rod, it's not heavy enough to 'break' it. For the weight of the 'fly' to break the rod, it would have to weigh in the multiple ounce range, and you'd not be able to cast it. AND, if it were to 'break' the rod due to it's mass, the break would not occur at the tip, but just ahead of the grip (where any overloaded rod will fail).

Many rods are damaged by being struck with the fly during the cast, primarily bead head flies, but that isn't a factor of weight, but SPEED.
