Thread: Flyline setup

    Default Flyline setup

This past week I was in the Sierra's with my family. On Saturday I went ff and noticed my line was a little worn. Later that day I drove to a nearby town and found a small shop that had fishing supplies. The owner was very busy putting away inventory and asked that I leave my spool and he would wind on the new line and knock off 25% if I could leave it with him for a few hours. When I returned later that night, he was gone and the gal that was there handed me a bag with my spool newly wound with line. When I got back to the cabin I noticed that he had tied a 2 foot section of mono at the tip of the flyline where I would normally tie on a tappered leader. When I tried tying my tappered leader to it using a nail knot, it would just slip off.

My question is does any one use this type of setup and if so what knot works best for tying on a tapered leader?

    Ty,

Is the MONO a really heavy diameter ??

If so, some shops will add it on so the client can make a look in it and then Loop-2-Loop the leader.

If the mono is attached to the FL in a really elegant way, keep it, ... if not, just snip it off and attach your leader as you normally do.

    Christopher,

Thanks for the reponse. The mono is of a heavy diameter and nicely tied to the tip of the flyline. I will probably end up tying a loop to connect a tappered leader.

He did that so you can change leaders without cutting the fly line each time you do. Instead you can just cut the end of the heavy mono at the knot you attach the leader with. You can not use a nail knot to attach a leader to that. Just use a surgeons knot or a blood knot.

That's the set-up I use alot, all you do is tie a loop in the heavy mono and connect your leader with a loop to loop connection.

The guy who runs that fly shop sounds like the kind of guy I like to do business with. Next time you are there, give him some more business. Buy a few flies from him etc. He didn't have to put that convenient 2 feet of mono on your new line. You can tie a small perfection loop to the end of the mono and attach your leaders to it. It makes changing them a quick, easy job. Or you can attach a 7 and 1/2 foot 4 x leader to the mono with a blood knot and leave it there, and change and adjust your tippets as the conditions dictate.

    AnalogBob,

    I like your philosophy.

Me too, ... I find that it's a nice touch by the guy (probably the owner).

I like to use local shops when I can. I also don't go looking for 50% discounts on big ticket items. The little gestures are appreciated though.
