Hello Rich, I don't know much if anything about kayaks either but I've been thinking about getting one and I've been looking here http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/kayaks/ and I'm liking what I see plus there is a dealer not far from me for when I'm ready to 'take the plunge' so to speak ! Hope that helps a little. Someplace to 'get your feet wet' :))

    Cheers,

This may not be the answer you're looking for...

From what I gather, couples who buy 2 person kayaks find they are not what they really had in mind.
They either are happier with two solo kayaks, or go for a canoe.
My $.02, grain of salt, all that, but a large porportion of the used kayaks you see are tandems
    Just saying...

    Default better yet

I would suggest two one man kayaks. Although some couples can successfully paddle a 2 man kayak without it ending their marriage, most cannot. Two small rec kayaks cost about the same as a larger two person kayak. You can paddle along side by side or single file or whatever, but each will be captain of their own vessel.

    They are great!

I own two old towns; 14, and 16 feet.

You can also use them solo, because the seats move.

Lots of room for equipement, or you dog.

The wife even paddles while I fly fish!!!

Why don't you wait till spring, and go rent, or borrow one to give it a try.

Always best to try before you buy!

    Happy holidays,

I should have made clear what it was to be used for We have a drift boat for the rivers She wants some thing to play at the lake with. it will never be in moving water and the lake where the cabin is has nothing to fish for execpt lake trout and we trole wire line 100 ft deep for them out of the power boat. we have paddled around the salt water in a 2 person kayak and thats kinda what she wants.

    Thanks

The old town discovery ; double 14 feet long!

I forgot to mention that even filled with water they float.

If you go on a lake, take the 16 footer, because it is a little more sleak, and cut water a bit better.

    Take care
