tippet???

what should i be using for tippet when fishing for brookies?

that would depend on the flies yer fishing.
divide the hook size by three to determine the tippet rating.

new2fly, for most Brookies 5-6X will work fine, even 7X if using very small flies. As Mikey says a good rule of thumb is to divide the fly size you are using (say 14-16) by 3. The result is roughly 5 and that should be the tippet size you use for that fly.

I don't even use "tippet" or "leader" material...and do and have done rather well on some of the toughest trout waters of the Eastern us...make all my own leaders useing mixes of hard and soft Mono..Hard for the butts and soft for the mid and tippet sections.And it's so much cheaper to buy spools of a few hundered yards rather than a few feet,You can make this sport as simple or complex as you like.Just glad to welcome you to the fold and wish you great fishing New2fly
