Thread: Info on bamboo

    Default Info on bamboo

My friend has a bamboo rod his mother owned. It was likely used for atlantic salmon here on Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia. If anyone has any info about it that would be much appreciated.

I know nothing about bamboo but it appears to be in very good condition. Some thread is just starting to come undone on one of the guides. The only writing on it says.

    Horrocks Ibbotson Co.
    Utica N.Y. Made in U.S.A

    1221

Also It is likely very dry as it has been stored for many years. Before use should a wet sponge be kept with it to humidify the wood some.

    Thanks

I just noticed the cloth bag for it says Power glass so maybe it is a glass rod. Goes to show how much I know about bamboo.

From Fiberglass Fly Rods by Johnson & Johnson, Jr. also from Centennial Publications the H & I #1221 was the Ranger Series, a 3 piece 9' rod at 6 oz. in the 1954 catalog. Was made from tubular glass, 4 guides on tip 3 on middle & stripping guide on the butt. States it's a big rod for for long casts, heavy line & heavy fish at the price of ......$20.00 !

Great info thanks. There is a reel with it that I have to get a hold of to look at. I am curious as to what weight line the rod is made for.

    Thanks again

Unless one finds an old advertisement for the specific H & I rod listing what line weight is recommended because H & I sort of left that up to the customer with these guidelines: light was a # 5/6 & medium was a #7/8! Best guess would be what comes logically a # 8/9. Have to remember that this was in the era of HCH & HDH flyline designations, so the GBF would be next.
