    Default Turkey Quill Slips

    i am getting a bunch of turkey quills, and i kno that you laquer them or sumthin so they stay together but are still pliable? is that right? could i use sally hanson hard as nails for this?

    yes and yes.
    I prefer to use krylon workable fixatif. you can find it at art supply stores.

    I use Grumbacher's Fixative and have to do it outside beacuse of the fumes. Is the Krylon any less stinky?

    You can also use thinned flexament. You'll want ventilation for that too.

    Use the fixative. It's a spray and much easier than trying to brush on Sallys. Especially, if like you say, you have a bunch. I spray two coats each side.

    krylon has the chemical smell too.
    I don't mind it too much.

    You don't mention if you are going to use them for wing cases or wings. If wings DO NOT COAT THEM!!!!!

    Depends on the style of fly I am tying. For wing cases, hopper wings and shellbacks I like to coat them (back side) with a light spray of Krylon clear lacquer.

    For upright dry fly wings, or no-hackle dun wings it is important not to coat them.. This style fly requires that the fibers can move a little to bend into the correct shape. You can add a layer of head cement to the trailing edge of the wing for extra durability, but it needs to be applied after the wing is tied in.

    ok thanks! yes i have like a dozen or more. i dont have krylon, but i think i have used it to put a gloss coat on ceramic projects in art class. is that the same stuff? could i get it at walmart?
