Thread: Ireland Salmon

    Default Ireland Salmon

There was a story on the news today about Ireland's Atlantic Salmon. There is a proposal to stop commercial fishing for them in the ocean. They also propose to prohibit fishing for Atlantics in some rivers in Ireland. This would cost the Irish government millions of dollars because they would have to buy out the commercial fishermen.
I also got educated because I did not know that Atlantic Salmon swam up rivers, deposit their eggs and go back to the ocean.
I'm not sure how catch and release fishing in the rivers would hurt the salmon?
The studies have shown a sharp drop in salmon runs.

Its too bad it has come to that. The other factor is that Salmon fishing in Ireland brings in significant tourist dollars and that loss would hurt.
