I could not follow how the tube set up was put together in the jaws...it just appeared in the vise....confused this old f#$T

You put a rod that is small enough to go through the tube that has somthing on the end to stop it (like a piece of bicycle spoke). Then clamp the rod in the vice while snugging it all up tight.Originally Posted by bones

Bones there are special tube holders that are placed in the vice jaws. The tube is then added to the holder. The holders go from a $60 HMH Tube vise converter to a $1 bicycle spoke that I use. I cut off a couple inches of the nut end of the spoke put it in my vise add a length of Q-tip then tighten the nut to hold the tube from turning while tying. Not all Q-tips are hollow--if you plan to use them on the spoke it is best to take the Q tip to a bike shop to get the correct diameter shaft. I suggest you raid the medicine cabinet to see if you have hollow tips before buying any. The model airplane shop have a selection of plastic and metal tubes. The flies are great if you want small or big fly with very little weight. go to Google and type in "Tube Flies" for some ideas for tying.
Hi Folks,
You can also use a finishing nail of the appropriate
size. Run the point through the tube and clamp in
your vise. The small head puts sufficient pressure

i've heard that the blue Q-tips are the hollow ones

Pretty much any of the colored ones....I have blue ,green and reddish ones..it's the whites that aren't hollow...don't know if there are exceptions
