A couple of people answered how I would have answered, and that is fish more.
Nothing helps more than experience and experience is gained by actually doing something. It helps to be observant and persistent and patient and all that stuff, but if you only fish 6 times a year you tend to forget what you remembered the last time.
Oh, and please don't tell me you didn't learn anything when you played golf. I used to play a lot of golf and each and every round I learned that I wasn't nearly as good as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, or Lee Trevino.

stealth
proper mending
follow the bubbles in the stream

Excuse my spelling and grammar, I hooked Mondays and Fridays to either fish or hunt.
Remembering that this is fun. This is a sport, and we are sportspeople, meaning we respect our query and threat it accordingly. That said, learning to concentrate on the most miniscule change in my line "lay" has paid incredible dividends. JGW

most important lesson....SLOW DOWN.....I get more fish on a handtwist retrieve with intermittent pauses...often the pause gets the fish...)

After almost 60 years of fly fishng I have two observations.
1. It is 90% presentationa nd 10% fly selection.
2. If you are not catching fish, it is time to make a change, (and not necessarily your fly).
