I was recently given some fly tying material by my brother in-law. He tried tying, but never really enjoyed it. He gave me all his fly tying material, including this tail. It's about 5" long. Any idea what it might be?

Looks like Raccoon Tail, But thats just my best guess!
Seen Ringtailed cat and it has much better defined rings...
Wish ya great fishing,Bill
I agree with Bill. Looks like a Racoon tail.
you could prolly make a pretty cool hat from it.
Looks like coon tail to me also. John
I wish you all everlasting flies and tight lines.
I think it is a Monga tail I have some and they are very good for tying small streamers. They also work real well for hair wing Salmon flies. Just a guess but I have trapped Coon's and they normally do not have such white and dark bands that go all the way around the tail. They are more mixed. Ron
A few years ago a materials supplier over here listed
'Bassarisk' tails in their catalogue. Your question trigger off my memory, so I did a search -

Donald that is the same critter LOL Ron
Ron,
I did a search on 'Monga' and couldn't find anything relavent, it must be a local or dialect word.
A very interesting little animal. I liked the name 'Miner's Cat'.
The same animal is also known as a ringtailed cat.....and those tails are much more well defined than is the american racoon, Been around them since I was a kid..My father was way into the Hound sports/Coon'Huntin...We trapped them and kept them for training dogs...even had one as a pet...Till it bit my mother on the shoulder....
One of the best tailing materials for my spinner flies...Hobofisher,
I did not forget you....I will get that spinner on it's way to you sometime this weekend... Sorry for the delay....
Wish ya great fishing,Bill
