Thread: Different timing stroke for fast vs. medium?

Default Different timing stroke for fast vs. medium?

I've notice a huge difference in Fast and medium action rods, but was wondering how a person should adjust the timing in the stroke or should it not matter? Pretty new to flyfishing, and after reading Castwell's article on watching your backcast, was wondering if the stroke should differ from one another.

change your timing slightly... for every inch of flyline you have in the air.

When I pick up a rod that is new to me, wheather it be fast of slow, I watch the loop. I try to adjust my stroke to make a good loop or as good as I can make with that rod.
Sometimes that is a slower stroke or more cocking of my wrist or a little more haul or a more powerful stroke and so on.
Loop control is the most important part of fly casting IMO

each rod, each fly line, each casting situation (wind, distance, fast or slow water) creates a need for timing you stroke a bit differently....
It's not one size fits all.
Sometimes the stroke comes automatically sometimes the first foul-up creates a better cast the next time.... work at it until it becomes second nature to you... no thinking needed.

This thread should be locked, printed out and posted four feet tall in every fly shop in america. What has been authored here is the very best wisdom any student can hope for.
