Thread: Wiconisco & Stony Creeks

  1. #1

    Default Wiconisco & Stony Creeks

After encountering some higher than desired temps in some head-water streams I explored, I wondered if any of the PA contingent who have experience with these two streams have any insight as to the summer water temps.

I already know about Clark's but since I never fished these two I was looking for a new spot to try.

    Dear Bamboozle,

If I were you, I'd head to Stony before the Wiconisco. You have about 10 miles of roadless area to explore on Stony Creek. The Wiconisco is a "****" crick that is finally starting to clear itself of the coal dust.

Do either of them stay below 70 degrees this time of year?

    Dear Bamboozle,

To be honest, I can't answer that. I can tell you that Stony is probably one of the more remote creeks in PA though. It is located entirely in a narrow heavily wooded valley with no development on it at all except for the lower 4 or 5 miles. It was also once a coal crick, but it's been cleaner for a lot longer than the Wiconisco. If there is a creek in Central PA that stays cool Stony is probably it.

    Dear Bamboozle,

    I'll anxiously await your report.

If you go to Stony be careful. I'm not trying to scare you away but I hear it is loaded with rattlesnakes and copperheads. I've never seen one back there but everybody says I'm not looking in the right places.

    Thanks for the heads up!!

I'll have my combo wading staff and snake beater with me so I'll be OK.

Snakes don't bother me as much as bats so if I stay after dark it should be extra creepy!

    Dear bamboozle,

If you stay after dark you are on your own.

There are mountain lions in the Stony Valley, I've seen the blurry pictures to prove it.

As water temp is critical to fish survival, why is it you seem to carry everything but a thermometer?

    Dear JC,

Living out East without the benefit of cool mountain snowmelt to moderate summertime stream temperatures I long ago learned that if I feel uncomfortable chances are the trout do too.

This time of year I tend to stick to bass and bluegills and leave the trout alone, but that is just me.

    Best Wishes,
