    Default Field and Stream readers...

In the May issue of Field and Stream.. there is a an article ...
    "Lessons From a Farm Boy"
    By Bill Heavey..

Its a great little read... about a guy who has tyied flies for over 40 years.. H.O.Patrick he is a Great ol'time... Yesterday I got a chance to go over to his house and take a few 'NEEDED' Lessons...

    I learned alot from him..
I learn how the whip finish a fly with my fingers (that was the first thing that caught my eye he did.. then I was hooked)...
Also learn a dubbing loop.. man is that easy...
he show me how to tye a woolly bugger.. and how to hide the hackle stem so the trout dont tear up the fly..

We spent about 4 hours together.. and he gave me an invitation to come back.. he told some great stories..

the big kicker is he doesnt fly fish..

That was a good article. I also like Thomas McGuane's piece on tarpon fishing. It was just as good as any of the chapters from "The Longest Silence".

i was surprised mcguane wasn't mentioned in the fishing writers section of the 50 best anglers. and i was also surprised that the 50 best didn't include angler dave or flats dude...

You know, I was very surprised as well considering his buddy Yvon Chouinard (sp?) made the list. I think McGuane's book "The Longest Silence" is just about my favorite fishing book. That's the kind of book that a writer can only produce once in his/her life. I've never been Saltwater fly fishing but after reading his chapters on it, I feel like I have!

As far as his fiction works, they often have fishing/hunting themes interwoven into the story, sort of like Hemingway. But after reading a few McGuane books I prefer McGuane.

dd, i'm with you--the longest silence is my favorite fishing book. 'an outside chance' is pretty darn good, too!

Thanks, I'll check it out. Have you read 92 in the Shade? Great book about a territorial/homicidal Key West Fishing Guide.

i did and enjoyed it. an outside chance is not just about fishing, but it is very well written and the story, 'the heart of the game' might be the best non fiction sporting story i've ever read.

As a fellow fan of "The Longest Silence", let me humbly suggest "The Moon Picked up an Acre of Bass", one of the best fly fishing reads of any genre.

    Good Drifts.
